조 바이든 미국 민주당 대선 후보는 29일 도널드 트럼프 대통령을 정면으로 겨냥해 주한미군 철수로 협박하며 한국을 갈취하는 식의 행위는 하지 않겠다고 공언했다.

 

또 한미동맹이 피로 맺어졌다고 중요성을 부각하면서 대통령 당선 시 원칙에 입각한 외교와 북한 비핵화를 향한 노력을 계속하겠다는 뜻을 분명히 했다.

바이든 후보는 이날 연합뉴스에 보낸 '우리의 더 나은 미래를 위한 희망'이라는 제목의 기고문에서 이같이 밝혔다.

각종 여론조사에서 트럼프 대통령을 앞서는 바이든이 대선후보로서 국내 언론에 기고문을 보내 한국 국민과 한국계 미국인에 대한 자신의 각별한 마음과 정책구상을 밝힌 것은 이번이 처음이다.

 

 

바이든 후보는 기고문에서 "말은 중요하다. 그리고 대통령의 말은 훨씬 더 중요하다"고 한 뒤 "대통령으로서 나는 우리의 군대를 철수하겠다는 무모한 협박으로 한국을 갈취하기보다는, 동아시아와 그 이상의 지역에서 평화를 지키기 위해 우리의 동맹을 강화하면서 한국과 함께 설 것"이라고 말했다.

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden pledged not to extort South Korea by targeting President Donald Trump head-on on the 29th <local time>, threatening with the withdrawal of US forces in Korea.

 In his contribution, Candidate Biden said, "Words are important, and the president's words are much more important," he said. "As President, I am not extorting Korea for reckless threats to withdraw our troops, but in East Asia and beyond. "We will stand with Korea while strengthening our alliance to keep peace."
