미국 하원 법사위원회가 해롤드 로저스 쿠팡 한국 임시 대표에게 2월 23일 열리는 하원 법사위 비공개 증언 청취 절차에 출석하라는 소환장을 발부했습니다. 이와 관련해 한국 정부 고위관계자는 “로비 때문인 것으로 안다”라고 말했는데요.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee has issued a subpoena to Coupang Korea's interim representative, Harold Rogers, requesting his appearance before the committee for a closed-door hearing on February 23rd. A senior South Korean government official stated, "We believe this is due to lobbying."

뉴스타파는 쿠팡이 미국 의회를 상대로 로비한 데이터를 전수조사했습니다. 쿠팡은 지난 2023년 이래로 꾸준히 의회 로비 규모를 늘려왔습니다. 작년 말까지 상하원을 통틀어 유력 정치인 총 29명에게 정치자금을 후원해왔는데요. 쿠팡 개인정보유출 사태 이후 ‘쿠팡 지키기’에 목소리를 낸 대럴 아이사, 에이드리언 스미스, 캐롤 밀러, 수잔 델베네에게는 공통점이 있습니다. 모두 쿠팡으로부터 정치자금을 후원받은 의원이라는 점입니다. 또한 이 의원들의 전 보좌직원이나 고문 등이 쿠팡 로비스트로 활동한 사실도 확인됐습니다.

Newstapa conducted a comprehensive investigation into Coupang's lobbying efforts with the U.S. Congress. Coupang has steadily increased its lobbying efforts since 2023. By the end of last year, it had donated to 29 influential politicians across the House and Senate. Darrell Issa, Adrian Smith, Carol Miller, and Susan DelBene, who have spoken out to "protect Coupang" following the Coupang data breach, share a common thread: they are all members of Congress who received political donations from Coupang. Furthermore, it was confirmed that former aides and advisors of these lawmakers served as lobbyists for Coupang.
